Following the success of last year’s event, MODE will be running a 5-day Summer School again from 16-20th June 2014.

In this intensive 5-day course we introduce multimodal methods for analysing communication and learning with digital technologies.

We introduce four theoretical perspectives: social action; moving image and film; design, genre and interactivity; and embodied cognition and interaction. We explore these perspectives through interactional, ethnographic, semiotic, narrative and x analysis of a range of different environments, including hospitals, schools, galleries and online platforms. The technologies we explore include digital video devices, Web 2.0 technologies, and mobile and tangible devices.

The course will be led by Jeff Bezemer, Carey Jewitt, Andrew Burn, Myrrh Domingo, Rosie Flewitt, Gunther Kress, Sara Price, Mona Sakr and Kate Cowan.

Day One: Introduction to the course; Selecting and recording digital data; Key issues for analysing digital data; and Ethics

Day Two: Analysing video recorded face-to-face interaction (Jeff Bezemer & Kate Cowan)

Day Three:  Analysing moving image and digital film production (Andrew Burn, Becky Parry & Vic Hurr)

Day Four: Analysing text making in digital and online environments (Myrrh Domingo & Gunther Kress)

Day Five: Analysing embodied cognition and interaction with tangible and mobile devices (Mona Sakr,  Sara Price & Carey Jewitt)

Registration
The course is open only to participants who are able to attend all five days from 16-20 June of the programme. The total fee for the course is £250. This fee covers tuition and lunch.
